Managing Layers

Before you can edit an image using layers, you must familiarize yourself with the concepts.

The first thing to understand is the relationship between a raster-based image (a photo, for example) and the rasterized electronic file that represents it. Using layers is the most natural way to work with these two differing forms. You can use layers to represent the finished image and then edit each layer, or you can work in a rasterized file and then «layerize» the image, turning it into an image that can be edited in layers.

A raster-based image (like a photo) and the resulting electronic file that represents it are two different things. As much as you might like to create a file of your design that is simply a flattened version of your image, it doesn’t exist.

The bottom line: Photoshop enables you to manage both as layers. You can import and edit a raster-based image in Photoshop by first creating a layer. You can also go into a flattened image and add layers, saving the image in a file format that can then be imported into Photoshop.

Figure 9-1 shows a simple file of a van. You can now edit that picture in several different ways using layers. You can turn the picture into a layer, as shown in Figure 9-1, or you can simply move and resize the layers, as shown in Figure 9-2. All of this can be done simultaneously, so there’s no time pressure to waste.

Creating a new layer

A layer is an object with which you can work. It displays on top of other layers and is always at work, even when you leave the Layers palette open.

Color Theory

Color Theory (or Color Harmony) is the combination of the three main parts of a color: Hue, Saturation, and Lightness. It’s also known as Absolute Color, and you’ll be using the terms in different ways.

Hue is how much something is colored.

Saturation is how intense the colors are.

Lightness is whether something is light or dark.

Hue

Hue can be represented by a color wheel, but it’s more commonly represented in a HSL (Hue Saturation Lightness) color space. Hue is a single number between 0-360 degrees, with the numbers representing different colors.

A color space can be made up of different hues. One example of this would be the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color space, which has red, green, and blue as its three axes.

Hue is usually represented in degrees. 0 degrees is represented by red, 360 degrees by blue, and all the colors in between in hues of blue. It’s very important to note that any colors outside of these numbers are from a different color space. For example, red 100 would mean 100 degrees.

Saturation

I just wonder, am I being overly simplistic? You were explaining the palya, and by quieting the mind, you could then concentrate on the palya, or the ujjayi breath. Or was there something else that was gained by silencing the mind?

Also, if one were to concentrate on the goal of the palya, would that not be even more complicated than the palya itself?

I have a lot of experience of practicing the various forms of yoga, and I have also read a lot about it. Although I am not necessarily searching for an answer to a question, I find that the benefit of a silence meditation is the quieting of the mind, which in turn gives the mind more time to be still, and more time to do the techniques of the meditation in a more successful way. But the way the mind is stilled is not necessarily specific – it can simply be something quiet.

I am uploading a file using multipart form-data to a server using ajax. I am using jQuery Form plugin. I just need to set the content-length header property of the response to the total size of the uploaded file, when we upload a file.
