on the front page of sonimus website, it says: «sonimus emulates analog compression in the digital world». if you are familiar with this statement, you will know exactly what to expect. satson cs is another application of what sonimus does. its an application with its own unique sound which can be heard from its first hour of usage.

satson cs has been created by sonimus as a top notch ssl emulation plugin on the market. it has the distinction of being the top selling audio plugin on amazon worldwide. it was developed after years of analyzing and dissecting the sound properties of this coveted channel strip hardware from the good ol days. satson cs has been created with the intention of providing an ssl emulation plugin that has the same characteristics of an actual ssl mixing desk. in other words, satson cs emulates most (if not all) of the features and character of an ssl, while at the same time giving the user full control over the parameters. the «10» in satson cs comes from the 10 channels you can use in a stereo output section. also it has been developed from the ground up by placing the most important ssl tools within a front panel which can be used and selected at will. that what is lacking in other plugins in the same price range.

when reviewing satson cs we will not be able to do a proper comparison against other ssl emulations. the reason why is that there is not another plugin of this type in the market. the closest plugin to satson cs is the sweetone. the sweetone is an incredible plugin with a ssl tone however it lacks many of the ssl character and features. so the only things we can recommend are comparing the two when used as a processing plug in. in other words, satson cs will always give you a better sound. its ssl character is superior and the processing tools are more all-encompassing. to even compare satson cs to sweetone is like comparing a ferrari to a truck.

The plug-in ships with a small number of presets for each of its effects, allowing users to set up both the buss and channel-strip versions to suit a wide range of styles. The presets themselves are nice and elaborate, offering full parameters for each effect. The EAX presets are no slouches either, although we can imagine that they might be a bit heavy on the CPU. Both versions of Satson allow for on-the-fly control of the effect, and dynamic headphone visualization.
Satson and Satsons sonic namesake are not something new in audiophile plug-in land. The sonics in question are one of the most iconic sounds of analogue EQ, often emulated quite well with simple EQ plug-ins. The difference, however, is Satsons ability to handle the mix just like a buss compressor. The user is presented with a double-controlled EQ with independent gain staging that not only adds edgy energy to a mix, but equally can shape a mix to retain a more natural top-end and definition. The emulation is definitely faithful to the real deal, with the compressed top end comes over with full dynamic possibilities. Listen to an isolated band of frequencies, and you will hear every nuance of the EQ algorithms at work, and how quickly the inverse frequency is set.
The same sonic potential is present in Satsons channel strip emulation, which allows the user to shape an entire mix into a wide and deep sounding EQ. With the larger band and gain control present here, the compression set behaves more like a compressor than a simple band-reject, making the top end more controllable. The simulation is tight and well toned, with the release of the frequencies already well before the bandwidth is completely closed. The level of coloration and active highs make the effect even more outlandish, with the treble clean and smooth just like a real console. And as a buss compressor, Satson Channel does not disappoint either, delivering the same punchy sound that SSL has been quite famous for.
