When working in Photoshop, it’s essential that you understand how layers work and what makes a change imperceptible. With Photoshop’s layer system, a single layer can cover part of an image, and the layer underneath it can change without affecting the layer above it. Use the image in Figure 4-13 as an example.

Photoshop can even enable a degree of transparency, so that the bottom layer can be slightly affected by what’s on top. In this book, if something is not clear or I want you to focus on particular aspects, I will explain a layer.

Photoshop is probably the best-known image manipulation tool, but it’s not the only option. In this chapter, I show you how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements. (For more on Elements, see Chapter 7.)

Identifying the tools in Photoshop

Here’s a rundown of the tools in Photoshop and how to use them:

The Rectangle tool: This tool is for drawing freehand lines and squares. It can work like the Line tool (covered in Chapter 2).

The Magic Wand tool: By simply clicking anywhere on the image in the selected tool window, the Magic Wand tool turns on. Click to select areas of the image that are white or transparent and the Magic Wand turns them into the selected tool’s color, as shown in Figure 4-14. At this point, if you change the tool back to the Magic Wand or, worse, accidentally click an area of the image that’s not white, you can easily select the area as well, so you can delete it, or just change it.

The Pen tool: Using the Pen tool to create a rectangle is easy, as you can press and hold down the Shift key to create a square. To draw a freehand line, click and drag a straight or curved line. Press and hold down the Shift key to create a straight line. Press and hold down the Ctrl key to draw a circle. Click outside the path or object to close the line or circle.

The Lasso tool: Just click to select the Lasso tool. Then drag the line across the image to select the area you want to select. The Lasso tool can also be used to select and reselect an area. Sometimes, if you click and then click again, the path becomes «active,» which means you can change or delete it. The image in Figure 4-15 is

Adobe Photoshop is the flagship program in the Adobe Creative Suite, and many photographers and graphic designers use Photoshop. It is a graphics and photo editing software with no less than 20 versions available. Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are not the same software. 1. Optimize your images

Before uploading your photos to Instagram, Facebook, or other image-sharing platforms, it is important to optimize the quality of your images for maximum quality on these platforms.

Adobe Photoshop will optimize the JPEG quality of your image. If you upload your image as a high quality JPEG image, it should be as large as possible because it maximizes your image quality on the platforms. The default quality of images is 0. JPEGs with a quality of 60 or more will be the highest quality on your device. Photoshop does not allow you to set the quality of a JPEG image below 60.

The Adobe Photoshop Elements Optimize Images tool is very useful for finding the best quality of your image. It has an in-built histogram and a preset quality level.

The histogram is the graph that shows where the image has an intensity of light or color. It is useful when you use the «adjustment» tools to balance colors and the saturation of the image. You can see how much of the overall image is illuminated by yellow and how much is dark.

The preset quality level is an automatic setting that you can change. The preset levels include: 90, 100, 110, and 120. You can select an option between 90 and 120, depending on how good the image is. The higher the quality level, the greater the file size of the image.

The preset quality setting is good enough for posting on Instagram, Facebook, and other sharing platforms. If you want to print a large image or a high-resolution photo, you can use the Print function and set the quality to 100 or 120

Gene Ho

Gene Ho (February 11, 1926 – October 9, 2013) was an American dancer and choreographer. Ho worked at the now-defunct New York City Center Ballet, where he became director in 1970 and retired in 1990. He subsequently became a faculty member at the American Ballet Theatre for many years, where he choreographed for the company’s Young Artist Program. He is also the founding president of the Asian American Dance Alliance.

Biography

Early life
Ho was born in New York City in 1926 to a Chinese immigrant father. Ho initially began dancing as a kid, but later studied ballet in his youth. He later became a dancer and choreographer in New York City. Ho also enjoyed performing a variety of folk songs.

Career
Ho began his career in television in 1953, performing with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Ho was part of the dance company from then on. Throughout his career, Ho collaborated with choreographers Marc Chagall, Paul Taylor, and George Balanchine among others.

He later worked as the director of the New York City Center Ballet, where he worked for the latter’s 40 years. The company was known for its Asian and minority artists, and Ho was a prominent figure in the ballet community. Ho retired in 1990.

After retiring from the New York City Center Ballet, Ho became a faculty member at the American Ballet Theatre in New York, where he worked with many performers of the company. Ho choreographed programs for the company’s Young Artists Program, which is a program meant to help young artists collaborate with professional artists. Ho choreographed for the program for many years before passing in 2013.

Personal life and death
Ho had a wife and daughter. Ho became a widower in 2013, and passed away on October 9, 2013, aged 88.
