There are currently 6,012 mutual funds operating in North America. The average fund has over $14 billion in assets.

Current

As of November 2011 there are approximately 704 funds in the United States andCanada. On a per capita basis they represent nearly 50% of the U.S. and Canadian total.

Historical

The number of funds has grown steadily since the early 1980s, driven by investors’ increasing number of choices. According to EY’s research, in 1975 there were about 2,000 mutual funds operating in North America. In 2010, there were approximately 6,000 funds in operation in the U.S. andCanada.

Fund Growth

The number of funds in operation has grown from approximately 2,000 in 1975 to 6,000 in 2010. This is about a 600% growth rate over that period of time and about a half a million accounts have been opened since 1975.

Over that same period of time the total capital managed by funds has increased from about $6.4 billion in 1975 to over $39 trillion in 2010.
