Cracking WEP is a whole different ball game compared to cracking WPA/WPA2. However, there are a few things that can be learned from breaking WEP. First, any encryption that is only composed of two groups of characters would be easy to break. This includes many sites that use WEP. Second, since WEP utilizes just 16 bit keys, the key space for 2 characters can be one million combinations! That means that it is fairly easy to break encryption that only uses numbers or only uses letters. The point is, if WEP is included into the equation of the final key, the number of combinations that you have to try is very small. As a result, if you have some sort of favorite word, which you are confident is not in the dictionary, you can try as many combinations as you want until you find the correct one.
The last and most important thing to keep in mind is that in order to crack WEP, you need to be using a cracking tool that will use all of the information that the access point is sending and receiving. So, some access points that you encounter will not work. You must be able to determine all of the information necessary to crack WEP. That means that your access point must be sending out all of the information. WEP is a man-in-the-middle technique, so your access point should have an Ethernet (RJ45) port to transmit WEP key information to the client. Most access points that use WEP will terminate the TCP/IP protocol at the Ethernet (RJ45) port. However, some will use a serial port to communicate the key information.
The next step is to setup a WEP cracking tool. There are two basic approaches to WEP cracking and both require the use of a programming language. The first method is the software defined radio (SDR) approach. Although the main line of software defined radios (SDR) are transmitting software, a bit of low level manipulation can be used to help put together a WEP cracking tool. Alternately, the second approach is to use a 3rd party cracking tool. Although there are a lot of good 3rd party cracking tools out there, each has its advantages and disadvantages. We will cover them both and attempt to give you an idea of which approach is best for you.
