i had an epiphany in the movie aladin. for a few moments i forgot that it was sujoy ghosh and rajkumar santoshi’s aladin. i almost felt that the stars, the actors, the props, the sets, the locations, the costumes, the production and everything else were a figment of my imagination. and then i suddenly realized that it was sujoy ghosh, who is responsible for creating that magical feeling. for the past one year, i have been longing for another magical film from sujoy ghosh. i have been hoping that aladin would turn out to be that film. but alas, i was deeply disappointed.

i watched this movie in a theatre full of teenagers. (it was rated 16, but i think they may have left the ‘a’ out). the whole theatre went «ohhhhhhhh». the reason? aladdin. aladdin is not a usual disney cartoon, and it’s not the typical movie for kids. we expect something from sujoy ghosh and rajkumar santoshi, and then we are in for a surprise. aladdin is an epic, fantasy-based movie. it’s the type of film that you watch if you are in your 20s or older. it’s a very personal, emotional kind of film. the pacing is spot-on, and the scenes do not drag. this is a different kind of sujoy ghosh.

as soon as i saw the poster of aladin, i knew i was in for a treat. i love aladdin and its the type of movie that i always want to watch. this film is magical and i got to see it in 3d. the 3d was great but i was expecting more. i was expecting the world of aladin to be very colorful and vibrant. i was expecting high-quality live action. i was expecting something different. i was not disappointed. i was still in for a surprise. the narrative of the film is a treat, and the actors have put in a lot of effort to make you believe that they have actually flown in that land with magic carpets and have acted in that land. the characters are very well-defined, and the movie has a good, strong script.

a big part of the movie revolves around jafar’s evil plan to use the genie’s lamp to turn aladdin into a real prince, so that he can marry jasmine. the genie was just supposed to appear in the nick of time, but his scene was cut from the movie, along with the song. the genie is, in fact, much more of a character in the original film. he was established as a real person with his own back story. he was a slave in a really big and mean castle, who was rescued by the genie, and returned to the castle in order to escape. in the original movie, there was a lot of importance placed on the genie, and we got to see a lot of scenes with the genie, jafar, and the genie’s lamp.
although jasmine is originally from agrabah, her parents are from india. when she sings the magic carpet song, she begins with the line «kiss me, kiss me, kiss me, kiss me» in hindi, but the rest of the song is in english.
the plot is a tad messy. the story begins where a wizard casts a spell on a man named aladin (sanjay dutt), thereby turning him into a genie. after freeing himself, aladin becomes a thief, to find a princess and help her become a real princess. the first 15-20 minutes of the movie make you wonder what the heck is happening, and the rest of the film doesn’t really make up for it. the only interesting thing is the chemistry between sanjay dutt and deepika padukone. other than that, the film is a bit uneven and the whole cast is not up to the mark.
the story is a little predictable, but there are enough funny scenes and some interesting characters. sanjay dutt does a good job in his role. he does not overdo his role and that is the best thing about him. good performances from jacqueline fernandez and amitabh bachchan. sanjay dutt and jacqueline fernandez have chemistry. good movie.
