AutoCAD uses the same architecture as its predecessor, AutoCAD 2000, and is based on GDI+. AutoCAD 2004 introduced a number of substantial improvements in rendering, including more consistent rendering with text, procedural textures, and effects. In particular, the creation and editing of 3D surfaces is now more consistent. Several significant features that had been missing in AutoCAD were added. For example, a feature of photorealistic rendering was added, as well as the ability to perform raytracing for such rendering. An option to render more control over the display of the surfaces was also added.

AutoCAD still uses the toolkit toolbox model and includes a powerful array of both native and third-party tools for creating models and drawing. The native tools include linetypes, styles, text, and dimension styles, but most of the third-party tools are for customizing the functionality of the CAD tools to accomplish specific tasks. Several third-party tools are included as part of AutoCAD, such as a Schematics Editor, programming environment based on Visual LISP.

A new rendering engine was introduced with AutoCAD 2010. This new rendering engine uses Direct3D 9, and allows the user to create a 3D scene with full support for lighting, shadows, camera effects, and textured objects. All of this takes place without rasterizing the scene into a bitmap image. It also introduces a new vector-based approach to editing geometry that has been well received by the CAD community.
