History

In the early 1970s, senior Computer Associates program manager Ronald L. Dyson began experimenting with drafting software. During his time at Harvard University, Dyson, alongside art professor Michael Rudell, began developing ConceptDraw PRO, a commercial CAD software package for making technical drawings and presentations. The program was released in 1982 and is still in use. In 1981, Dyson co-founded the BDT Group, a small Cambridge consulting company, which later went on to become Computer Associates.

While at Harvard, Dyson wrote a routine for orienting the screen to make drawing easier. He had then made it part of his drafting software, but it was far too slow for most purposes.

Dyson knew the chief computer engineer at MIT, Seth Shostak, who worked on Seymour Papert’s turtle project. Papert was able to convince him to make a new kind of turtle that could be a useful tool for creating software.

Dyson told Shostak that he had found a routine in drafting software that would allow a pencil or mouse to be used instead of a graphics tablet. Shostak’s vision was to have a turtle which could move around and pick up objects. Once an object was picked up, the user could drag the object around the screen to draw it. On November 9, 1981, Shostak and Papert demonstrated the first version of the turtle to the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. It was eventually named Kermit and it was the first CPM-based drawing program.

The first release of Autodesk’s AutoCAD was called «AutoCAD Lite» in July 1982 and allowed a 100 square-foot room of floor space to be drawn. Initially, only one person, the «host», could be the turtle, and this task was known as the «turtle host». A separate drawing could be viewed simultaneously on the host’s screen.
