The House of Whispers is a beautifully hand-painted escape room that is a joy to explore.

Written by Alpha Omega Games, the team behind some of the indie games industry’s best titles. The goal of our project was to create a refined escape room game. A secret garden escape room that would reveal hidden messages and puzzles in the garden. A former fashion designer who has now moved to San Francisco. At her new home she finds an envelope waiting for her with only her name on it.

I’ve played several of the room-escape games they have released. And I love them all. But I really wanted to dive into a more procedural generation based room. I wanted something easier for new players. And I wanted a room that would still be challenging and full of puzzles.

House of Whispers. The Game

Time is ticking down. You must make haste. Your friend is missing, and no one seems to know what happened to him.

You spend your time solving puzzles in various rooms. You use items you find in each room to move to the next. Sometimes you must go beyond the room’s boundaries. Sometimes you need to get to the next room, or the next room in the hall, or the next room in the abandoned building.

Filled with artwork based on the world’s most macabre legends, you’ll find yourself lost in the House of Whispers.

My time with House of Whispers

Have you ever wanted to play an escape room, but you wanted something different? Something that felt more like an actual escape room. A room that had puzzles. A room with a physical barrier.

And then there was House of Whispers.

House of Whispers is more of a clockwork puzzle game. The clockwork of the puzzle. The mechanics are easy to understand and you are given access to an overview of what you’re doing at any given moment. You choose your actions and you can see the effects, and you can see which actions you can perform

A small community of people have vanished, and only a solitary child remains. Your task is to put together a dreamlike dinner party for the young girl. She will invite you to eat with her as she plays with her toy-stuffed owl. As she explores the apartment and prepares the first course, she will talk to you about her search for her missing family. Eventually the group of guests will disappear, but you will learn why they vanished and what they left behind.

About the Creators

I am a designer and a programmer working together in different companies over the years. Nowadays I mainly work on my side project, which is “Dinner With An Owl”. I am currently the lead designer/programmer and I make the music. I am also the main voice in the game. During the game, there are a few other contributors who have voiced the character, and some others who helped the team on the game.
When I was a kid, I found myself engrossed in novels and played a lot of Japanese video games. It turned out that my favorite movie is Viy. In fact, I also worked on a game about it, “Viy – The Mysterious Journey of Rebirth”. I also draw, and I liked the illustration style in Breakfast With Bear, so I have tried to create visuals similar to that.
I also love the movie “Lost Highway” which involves surrealism, and I enjoy an escape room more than any other game. I like escape rooms since they are fun to play and are also a good mental exercise. “Dinner with an Owl” is the first escape room I ever did, and it was very fun. But I couldn’t create a game about it until I met my partner who did the programming.

Jeez, I’ve been waiting for this game for ages. My best memories of my teenage years were playing Japanese horror games like Viy and Resurrection. We wouldn’t have a clue how to do this kind of thing at the time though, and there probably wouldn’t be a game like this made for ages more.
But I love it. Japantown. Isn’t that such a brilliant name.

Moody ambient music plays as you start the game. Then a voiceover will tell you the story (most of it in written form, but the story is worth the wait). The story is quite interesting and leaves you with a lot of questions. The voiceover makes everything so good. From the peculiar French style of the narration, to the movement of the «Black Shades» the game uses as part of the escape room. I have no idea how I feel about those so I will leave you to decide yourself. Anyway,

When you’re done reading the story and the Black Shades move, they will all leave the room and a new one will appear. This becomes the central gameplay mechanic of the game. When you go to the table to eat, as the waiter spins the outside of the plate you will see the Black Shades, one for each of the participants. As you start your meal, a story will be told of a man getting lost in a forest, missing his family and friend. The story is more poetic and contains a lot of surrealism.

In the end, the man sits down for dinner with his friends and family. After the meal, he leaves the restaurant and, as he walks home he remembers his neighbor and rides up to his house. As he opens the door, he sees his neighbor lying in a pool of blood. The voiceover tells you that he was attacked, then cut by an unknown object. As he gets closer, he also sees the Black Shades on the ground. Keengamer

I love the story and the atmosphere that is set up with the pictures and the colors that are used. The story told makes me feel uneasy because i want to know more, but i am at a loss. I really do not know how to explain it, but the pictures together with the voiceover make the atmosphere. The pictures are more than just decoration, they have a purpose.

The Black Shades move around the room trying to capture you, in a stressful situation. So you need to find a way out of the room to escape, all without getting caught. I love the music that is incorporated into the game. It gives off a very relaxing atmosphere. Like the song «Seasonal Homecoming» by The Mountain Goats.

It starts off very familiar, until it goes into a dark, ominous mood.

I really like that the atmosphere is set up well. The french style of the narration is very attractive and adds to the game’s theme. The pacing

Dinner with an Owl is a fun quick time event game (QTEG) in which you enjoy nice food, eat new dishes and also learn fun facts. So for now this is all you need to know about this game:

So how exactly to play? It's simple:

You are in a certain kitchen wearing a chef's apron and you are allowed to use up to 8 ingredients which you can place on the kitchen counter, otherwise your food will be spoiled.
There are two boons of this game. One is that you can eat any dishes you select after completing a task/quest of some sort.
The second one is that you can also unlock more recipes by completing a quest. Of course you have to remember your quest and things may go wrong for you. So if you mess up, you have to start again.
