adaptation studies have long been plagued by a lack of any universal consensus on what constitutes an adaptation, which arguably makes discussion of the topic seem vexed. nevertheless, the practice of adaptation has been a dominant mode of film and television production since the creation of the former, and has been a major component of the latter since television first arrived on american screens. although film adaptation and its discontents (2007) makes a number of important contributions to the field, it remains a theoretical framework that has yet to be fully developed. this chapter adds to the body of literature by situating adaptation within a wider theoretical framework. drawing on the theoretical works of hans robert jauss ( 2000 ) and arthur danto ( 1967 ), i demonstrate how the adaptation of television series to the screen can be mapped onto a number of discrete and related modes of screen mediation. i subsequently present a detailed account of three television series that exemplify each of these modes: the simpsons, battlestar galactica and 24. while adapting television series to the screen has been an important component of television history, the chapter concludes by using the established theoretical framework to explore the current and potential significance of the trend for adaptations that are not based on original screen texts. this chapter also addresses some of the criticisms that have been levelled against the use of television series as source material. for example, martin [b7] argues that the prevalence of remakes on television has led to the production of an increasing number of mediocre films, and that the trend to adapt television series is part of this tendency. in this article, i demonstrate that this belief, at least as it applies to the television series the simpsons, is unfounded. in particular, i demonstrate that the three episodes i discuss, which were all made between 1997 and 1999, are some of the best episodes of the television series that have ever been produced, and that they are in fact better than many of the episodes that were made between 1991 and 1995.
