The big improvements in Lightroom 5 are in the new preset and collection features. In version 4, you’re forced to use standard settings for most operations. In version 5, you can create your own custom settings. For instance, I can create a preset called «Color Separation,» which adjusts my color settings to create a nice separation between my blue and green just a little bit better than my standard setting. Other preset groups include color, sharpness, exposure, and so on. Collections are groups of images that share similar look and feel.

As with version 4.2, Lightroom has a couple layout changes. The Grid is gone, and you can now preview and edit layers and masks. PSD files are now supported; you’ll need to temporarily convert your files when you import them into Lightroom 5. You can also disable the autosave feature, I believe. Other than these changes, Lightroom 5 is the same as earlier versions.

Here are a few notes on the biggest of the new features in Premiere Pro CC 2015. First, the database is maintained in the bin. Even if you open something in the Premiere bin, it will still be there if you drag and drop it back in. Second, when you have used the Preset Bins tool to create your own set of presets, those become accessible from the main menus. The Design community has embraced all the work that Microsof has done on the new interface. Of course its great to have a new interface. What I look forward to the most is the ability to create with AI editing. In reality the new interface has been missed for some time: now it is possible again!

It’s time to run some tests. A quick test using the new «Explore» features in the new (beta) version of Photoshop. This features an eye dropper that can be used in Photoshop and a guide window that shows what it would be picking up. It’s a good way to first look at what the eye dropper can do. I like the idea that it can pick things up that I can’t even see.

And all the above features are of course also available in Elements. So, as well as the new features, you also have the rest of the great (and wonderful) features that CS6 has included. The features that stand out that Elements is often missing are the ability to do both CMYK and Color separations (as well as RGB) as well as the ability to do conversions to PDF.
