email: gartetxeceit.es funding information lancor 2000, s.coop abstract the industry has a great interest in compact, light, and low cost electrical machines. in this paper, a new design of air cooled electrical machine is proposed, and a detailed case study on three pole squirrel cage motor is presented. the novelty of the proposed design is in the use of conventional stator laminations for the stator and the stator flanges for the rotor. the main advantages of this design are high efficiency due to the decrease of the air gap and high power density due to the reduction of the rotor size. moreover, the proposed design can be readily adopted in most of the existing machines, and is easily integrable with the existing winding arrangements. the case study is evaluated in terms of electrical parameters, thermal parameters, and mechanical parameters. the investigated motor is driven by four d.c. brushless d. motors using pulse width modulation (pwm) control. the reduction of the air gap in the proposed design results in the reduction of the reluctance torque. however, in order to have an acceptable phase advance, the air gap must be smaller than the rotor to stator pole pitch. the reduction of the air gap from the existing value to the minimum value is achieved by placing the stator laminations in radial slots of the rotor. in order to obtain the minimum air gap, the stator laminations are tightly clamped, and rotor teeth are removed. the specific structure and design parameters are discussed in detail. the inner and outer rotor teeth are constructed as two separate laminations. the shape of the inner rotor teeth is specified using a nonlinear tooth profile. the design variables are the number of inner teeth, the nonlinear tooth profile, and the stator pitch. the motor is designed to operate in a continuous duty mode. the motor is simulated using an electromagnetic simulator. the results of the investigation are satisfactory. the maximum electrical power factor is greater than 0.9. the maximum output power and maximum efficiency are 8.6 kw and 82.8%, respectively. the thermal parameters are calculated using finite element analysis. the results are satisfactory. the investigated motor is designed to operate at 50 hz and an output power of about 10 kw. the main advantage of the design is the reduction of the air gap. moreover, the fan size is small, and the cooling efficiency is high. the design can be readily implemented in most of the existing machines and is easily integrable with the existing winding arrangements. a specific three pole squirrel cage motor is investigated and optimized using the proposed design. the torque, the efficiency, and the power are calculated. motors using pwm control. the minimum electrical power factor is 0.84, and the maximum output power is 6.1 kw. the maximum efficiency is 88.5%. the rotor inertia is reduced by 2 times. the maximum electrical power factor is 0.87. the maximum output power is 7.6 kw. the maximum efficiency is 85.1%. the torque is 7.9 nm. the fan size is small, and the cooling efficiency is high. the comparison of the investigation results with other designs is discussed. key words: squirrel cage motor, pwm control, air gap reduction, air cooling, electrical machine design
