Android MediaPlayer not playing after stopping audio source

I have an Android app which is playing a music file, which then stops itself. The music file is owned by a different app, however, which has the following permissions (this is how it was specified at the time of creation):

I can start the audio file just fine, but when I play it, it immediately stops. I’m not using the AudioManager.play() method. Instead, I’m creating a MediaPlayer object, using it’s setAudioSource() method, with the following parameters:
player.setAudioSource(MediaPlayer.AudioSource.RADIO);
player.setLooping(true);
player.prepare();
player.start();

I then call the following methods when I want to stop the music:
player.stop();
player.release();
player = null;

This stops the music, however I can’t «re»play the music with the above code, it just crashes the app.
I’ve tried a few different things, including using MediaPlayer.stop(), MediaPlayer.stop(), and using breakpoints to debug. I keep seeing that the MediaPlayer object returns to a state where state and state() are both 0, which is what I would expect from a freshly created MediaPlayer object.
I’ve never really used the MediaPlayer object before, is there something I’m missing here? Should I be doing something else to stop and release the music file?

I don’t want to make any grandiose statements about the Higurashi games as a genre as I’m sure plenty of you do but I think they truly are the best fiction based games out there. Take the time to read the characters as they all have wonderful back stories and the story as a whole doesn’t just rely on the plot being the character to lead you through it. In short, this game goes some way to changing the tide on JRPGs to the better.

The characters in the Higurashi series are important enough that most of them can’t be summed up by one review and even when they are they’re still worth looking up. In the third chapter, Tohru has finally found love and a family thanks to the main character of this story, Rei. Her sister, Shizuru, who is also a character in this story, is one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen, made more spectacular by her slow descent into anorexia. She’s even mentioned in the story that she was the first girl he ever kissed.

It’s amazing that she actually exists and Shizuru is a great deal of the reason that we love Tohru so much. Her arc is also interesting and well-acted. Though I felt like they lost track of her a bit in the next two chapters as she gets more minor character parts. But she makes a comeback in the story proper. Tohru’s grandmother, an old woman who’s either in her 70s or 80s, is an incredibly evil old hag who looks exactly like her grandmother. I didn’t get much of a chance to play around with her, but it was very cool to play her in the story.

The game really shines when you get the chance to do the detective work. You can spend an awful lot of time just listening to dialog and it really forces you to pay attention to things you wouldn’t normally. It feels like it’s almost pulling away from the video game genre a bit. That said, it doesn’t work too well sometimes. During some character’s «drama» scenes, they just don’t make sense. I played as Tohru, so I wasn’t directly participating in these scenes. I guess it’s just that they were so important to the story, I didn’t have much of a choice.

The music was great throughout, but the OST by the writer, Rumiko Takahashi, was especially good. I love the soundtrack of the series
