– Extra detail and subtle touches in every single levelThe Directorate General of Human Resource Development (DHRD), the government nodal department for allocating central funds for promoting academic activities among colleges and universities has decided to slash central grant to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) for the current financial year by nearly 20%, from Rs 9,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore, official sources said on Friday.

DHRD, which has the in-charge of central grants to the states, has advised its state units to continue the central grants to colleges and universities in their respective states as per the state level allocation.

This will keep the gap between states and central grants of colleges and universities in the country.

Several state governments have been advertising for re-evaluation of the central grant to colleges and universities during the ongoing academic year to improve infrastructural facilities, provide more scholarships and recruit more faculty members.

DHRD had earlier announced its plan of reducing central grants to states on the basis of National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) recommendations.

The central grants for academic activities by DHRD cover the funding of faculty members, administration, operation and maintenance of institutions for award of degrees, placement and research activities, scholarships, and other activities.

The central grants to colleges and universities of Class I and II are Rs 8,765 crore as on August 1, 2017. This includes Rs 6,000 crore for pre-matriculate colleges and Rs 2,765 crore
