To get started we recommend that you first copy your original BIOS into youre new FCEUX installed directory. Doing this allows you to use FCEUXs save feature if you want to save your progress into a file called SCEmu.sav then copy that file to your SCEmu folder, which will allow you to continue your game afterwards.

Each layer of the HLE BIOS has it’s own specific steps, which normally (and ideally) are executed in series. For example, you should start by disabling HLE device emulation before loading the BIOS, then during the BIOS setup stage, hook up your Dreamcast controller, then turn on sound and then plug in the power cable. Most of these steps are obvious, however you should also expect to run into a few problems which will need to be ironed out. While we cant cover every possible step for you, here is an overview of the process.

First of all you shouldnt expect your dreamcast to work without a Dreamcast front-end such as FCEUX. However, if youve installed the wrong BIOS then you can have problems with your controller not being detected at all, or if the jumpers are wrong. Also, remember that the BIOS setup will need to run off the disc, so you may need to find and use your favorite Dreamcast optical disc drive.

You need to load a Windows CE BIOS loader first to load up this BIOS. If you have one you like, load it and hold down the left mouse button to save the image onto a disc or USB device. The loader will then automatically load the BIOS off that disc or device and you will be ready to start the actual BIOS setup.

Unlike the Windows front-end, once the FCEUX BIOS setup is complete, you will need to load a customised BIOS directly from your HDD. To do this, you need to copy the FCEUX bios into a folder called BIOS inside youre SCEmu folder. You will find the SCEmu folder inside FCEUX by going to: C:\Program Files\FlyingHead\SCEmu. Although this takes a long time to happen, its one of the first steps in your new game’s life. You shouldnt have to do this after installing an official Dreamcast BIOS, so you can safely ignore these steps until you need them. Also remember that every layer of the HLE BIOS uses it’s own settings, and the way these work may differ from the official Dreamcast BIOS.
