Troubleshooting

Alfalfa is an easy-to grow seed that should sprout in between 2 and 6 days. Here are some issues to be aware of should your seeds not sprout in this time.

Too dry: Seeds require water in order to develop. Seeds of alfalfa absorb approximately half their weight in water before they germinate, which makes them appear to be swelling. If your seeds are too dry, they will not germinate. Add more water to the plate until the seeds are damp but not floating on the surface. You could also soak the seeds for a few hours; however, make sure you drain them and wash them in fresh water before spreading them on the towel.

Too wet:If the seeds are too moist, the new shoots and roots could become rotten before they get a chance to grow. It’s also possible that mould may begin to develop on the seeds. It’s fine for the paper towel to be moist however, the seeds shouldn’t be floating in water. Remove any excess water from the plate each time you mist or water the seeds.

Too cold or hot: Alfalfa grows best at 20-25°C. If you’re planting your seeds indoors in winter, set them in a warm place. You might need to regularly water your seeds should you cultivate them in extremely warm temperatures. They’ll dry out faster.
