although all players have to learn magic, some learn it faster than others. the same applies to competition. the more experience you have, the more you know. in my book, i talk about this a lot. «the younger players tend to have a lot of gaps in their knowledge and experience. they may not know the best way to approach magic, and may assume that it’s time to play a game when in fact the right time is to load up on quality cards and learn the ins and outs of the game.»

magic is a game of very high variance. anything can happen, and that includes you winning. this is why the number of matches you play is so important. the more matches you play, the better your probability of being a good player is. you will experience ups and downs, but if you enjoy the game, you will keep playing.

my original plan was to play just one month with the goal of getting my decklist up to the point where i could play the legacy gp but everything went a bit faster than i expected. so, i played for a total of four months before i played my first gp. i had also only played one gp prior to this one. having said that, i still think that the goal of playing a month really helps you. it lets you focus on just getting better at magic and not so much worrying about all the other stuff that goes with it.

there are some misconceptions about magic. one of those is that it’s a «game of luck.» i have always felt that the game of magic is «luck+skill.» i think of magic as the opportunity to play a game of skill where the game is played by a set of rules. the rules are made up of four components:

this player wrote the list of basic lands. his approach to magic design was more from the perspective of the game than it was from the perspective of the player. i think that is the reason that so many people have been able to pick up his decks and find a home in the format. he was also the one who came up with the idea of the pro tour having a theme. it was designed to be a tournament that was about a product, and while that idea is no longer in use, i think it was a fun concept to have.
one of the central tenets of chapin’s philosophy is that every tournament should be its own environment. to him, the core philosophy of magic is the idea that you should be able to pick up a copy of the game and learn the basics of the game within the first five minutes. because of that, he’d like to see a few people in the room at the beginning of the tournament, and so you’ll see him at the start of every event he plays in. if you ever see him at an event, come and say hello. i think he’ll be happy to see you.
one of the most difficult parts of my job is making magic fnm and gnm work, and balancing it with my other work. i have a lot of managers. one of the most important is my wife, who has played magic longer than i have. she has two kids under 5, and she has her own career. i’m good with managing things like that, because my wife has been very good at balancing my responsibilities.
patrick chapin is a legend. he was a card design genius, a great writer, a great leader, a great competitor, and one of the most humble people in the entire game. as a fan, he taught me about magic and gave me a passion for the game that i still feel today. i cannot imagine this class, or the fans of this class, without him. here’s to the new generation of chapin.
