We’re halfway through 2015, and you can just tell that all the new and noteworthy apps that arrived in the first half of the year are drawing to a close as we prepare to see all the new stuff that is about to release over the next couple of months. Adobe is an industry juggernaut that dominates the landscape of the professional photo editing world, so when the Creative Cloud-based company rolls out its latest iteration of its most popular application, there is a lot to like. What’s so particularly exciting about this update is that it comes with several features that previously existed only in Photoshop CS6, and with them, users have a whole new suite of tools to go all square on their images.

The standard set of noise reduction tools in Photoshop CC include channels, levels, curves, and Local Adjustment Layers. However, one of the strongest additions to this year’s version is the Logarithmic Noise Filter, which aims to alleviate the “clumpiness” that tends to occur in images made with depth of field or wide apertures.

I am really not a fan of the new “print” feature. I have found many times that a print of a photograph, rather than giving me excellent results, resulted in something that looks like it’s photographed on old, yellowed paper.

This feature is named “Cache” but the basic idea is that the cache is always full on any computer. Any photo you want to use has to go into the cache. So if you have a cache size of 1 Gigabyte, your Photoshop has to open and load 1 Gigabyte of each of your photos into the cache. Not a given that the loader actually finds your old photo. That probably only happens when you go to save and it is necessary.

What It Does: The Rectangular Selection tool gives you the ability to select a rectangular area within the image. You can make your selection larger or smaller by either clicking the handles or using the mouse wheel. You can quickly erase the selection by clicking anywhere outside the selection or resetting the selection. While the selection tool is active, the cursor shows a white box around the selected area.
