The exact number of layers in a Photoshop document is determined by the «Number of Layers» setting. While retaining the default settings of 16, you can change the number of layers of an image in Photoshop. Viewing The Image and Image Properties
You can view images in two ways: in the layers panel (covered in the later section «Adding and Removing Layers») or by displaying the images as thumbnails in the Browser. In either case, your first step when viewing an image is to take a look at its image properties. Here are a few things to consider when viewing images:
The number of pixels and the color depth is the first thing to check. For instance, if you have a 10-megapixel image, it has 10,000,000 pixels.
Resize an image or crop it and then view the changes in a separate «slider» menu. Figure 4-1 shows a slider after I cropped a 16-megapixel image down to the area that I wanted.
Examine your image properties to determine the paper type of your image, because Photoshop allows you to manipulate the image in many ways that make the image look different on a certain type of paper. To check the paper type of an image, choose Image⇒Image Properties. You see the Paper Type drop-down menu and several presets are chosen for you. If you don’t see the Paper Type drop-down menu, check to see if «Custom» is selected instead. (Adobe has allowed you to choose your own paper types, but the truth is that most people never use this option.)
Fixing a bad crop
If you crop an image so that you end up with an odd, jagged crop, you may have to fix the problem. Some fixes are easier than others. Check out the following:
Auto-Crop uses the area of the photo as determined by the auto-cropping tool and attempts to use it in a clean way. It can be very effective if you don’t mind the imperfect result. However, most people don’t like it because it tends to eliminate parts of the image from the final image.
Crop Now works well if you’re totally positive about your crop — just crop it!

Here’s an example of a 4* Lightning Strike overlay on a photograph. This overlay is created in Photoshop Elements using the available lightning strikes in the layers panel. The lightning strike layer is above the photograph layer and the diffuse and reflection layers are below the photograph layer.

How to make a simple lightning strike on a photo
1. Click the Add Layer icon, or press Esc to return to the Layers palette.
2. Click the Add New Fill or Gradient button to add a new fill or gradient to the top layer.
3. Name the new fill or gradient. For example, Lightning Strike.
4. In the Color panel, choose the color of the lightning strike. Any color is fine.
If you want to make the lightning strike more intense, hold down the Ctrl key (⌘ on the Mac) while you make the fill or gradient. Do not click the color wheel or the Transparency panel.
5. The fill or gradient has been created and is now visible on your layer.
6. Select the Fill or Gradient from the Layers palette.
7. Click the Transparency panel in the Layers palette to open the Transparency dialog.
8. Click the dialog box’s radio button to open the Transparency dialog. Choose Keep Transparency and click OK to save the transparency.
9. Highlight the lightning strike layer in the Layers palette.
10. Double-click the lightning strike layer in the Layers palette to open the Layer Properties dialog.
11. In the Blend If panel, choose Multiply from the drop-down menu.
12. Highlight the photograph layer in the Layers palette.
13. Click the downward-pointing arrow in the Layers palette.
14. In the Layers panel, scroll to the right to reveal the settings for the photograph layer.
15. Click the arrow to the left of the blend if drop-down menu.
16. Choose Multiply in the drop-down menu.
17. Click OK in the Layers Properties dialog to save the blending.
18. Click on the lightning strike layer in the Layers palette to select the lightning strike.

The translation process of this manuscript into English led to some confusion in the use of the word «jelly», which is an old and common term in the field of pharmaceutics. This term may be easily misunderstood by some readers for the term «jell», and we feel that this may be a source of misinterpretation for our study. The difficulty arose because the scientific name of the polymer used in our studies was incorrectly reported as Eudragit S100.
In our study, Eudragit S100 is mentioned in four different ways, as Eudragit S100 (Polyethyleneglycol 8000) 20 kDa; Eudragit S100 (Polyethyleneglycol 8000) 20 kDa; Eudragit S100 (Polyethyleneglycol 8000) 20 kDa; and Eudragit S100 (Polyethyleneglycol 8000). As this polymer was used for the preparation of microspheres, these four different types of names cannot refer to the same polymer. The difference of these names (Eudragit S100, Eudragit S100 (polyethyleneglycol 8000), Eudragit S100 (polyethyleneglycol 8000), and Eudragit S100) is the number of repeating units of polyethylene glycol in the polymer. Eudragit S100 is a single monomer, whereas the other three polymers are the mixture of monomers. These monomers are formed by joining with polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains in different structures. It is important to note that Eudragit S100 (polyethyleneglycol 8000) 20 kDa is an amphiphilic, amorphous polymer, whereas Eudragit S100 is a monocarboxylic acid.
