but despite the problems, silent hunter 5 is extremely polished and runs very smoothly. and while the view isn’t all that great, at least the game does a good job of making you feel like a real captain.
for the most part, you’ll find that all the missions are similar. even the ones that seem the most different involve you shooting up a convoy or escaping the same. you may be the best u-boat commander in the entire allied fleet, but sometimes, it’s just not enough to outmaneuver your enemy. part of the fun is sinking those merchant vessels and helping your crew make their escape. you’ll need to choose whether you’re going to make it back to germany or help your crew make it home. it’s hard to say when you’re exploring the waters, which are filled with mines, german u-boats, and the occasional real-life danger, such as german warships. silent hunter 5 excels in the feel of combat. it’s a nice change from the relatively static, scripted missions of silent hunter 4 and silent hunter: legends. on a mission, your boat will move across the map. you’ll have to evade obstacles and try to out-maneuver your enemies. unfortunately, the game feels out of balance and out-of-place. a lot of the fun is in getting your crew to the surface, where the game feels like a strategy game. but then you’d be better off playing a game like risk. the real problem with this design is that the game makes it difficult to get your crew to the surface. while on a mission, you can only enter or leave the water through air vents or with the aid of an escort. if the mission calls for a surface dive, you’ll be forced to stop and wait. if you’re trying to evade enemy detection, you’ll have to go through that long, tedious process each time, which is incredibly annoying. this makes the early missions frustrating, when you’re trying to get your crew to the surface. your first few hours are spent in a frustrating state of limbo, waiting for your crew to make it to the surface. you can use your sub’s limited crew to man the guns, but you’ll have to spend precious resources on its repair and a lot of time making sure they’re comfortable.
