although we’ve already seen some of the start8 live wallpapers available, the whole range is a little more varied. windows 8 is already starting to show its cracks, and although liveview is still a little rough around the edges, it’s a lot more compelling than the start screen. however, there are three liveview wallpapers that can’t be bundled with the start8 package, and these are at least as good as their start8 counterparts. all the wallpapers offer three different live wallpapers, and all are worth looking at.

the start screen can be enabled or disabled in the same way as in startisback, but unlike startisback it doesn’t attempt to mimic the look of the old start menu. instead, it looks more like windows 8’s full-screen metro ui, and has a number of «features» that make it feel more like windows 8 than windows 7. these include the ability to force the start screen to open in tablet mode, to show apps in the thumbnail view or pinned to the desktop, and so on. the problem is that they don’t work very well.

don’t get me wrong, i’m glad that microsoft has finally decided to open up windows 8, but all this does is make the os look even more like a metro knockoff, and windows 7 isn’t metro. what’s more, it doesn’t really solve the issue of the start screen being a poor substitute for a real start menu, and in fact makes it worse. if microsoft wants to convince people that windows 8 is for them, it needs to do something to make the desktop actually look like a desktop, and to close the real start menu. the ability to pin apps to the start screen or show the old-fashioned icon view is nice, but again, it doesn’t make up for the fact that the start screen doesn’t actually do what it says on the box.
