Sunny, easy week for Team USA
The Euro Pacific College Games are being held in Eagle River, Alaska, June 9-14 and there are 11 North American teams going from 4 western states. There are five women’s teams from Washington, two from Oregon, and one each from Colorado, Idaho, and New Mexico. All of the teams except the New Mexico Raiders are in the top group. The Washington State University women’s team had the most impressive results when they won the bronze medal at the Peach Invitational a couple of weeks ago.
On Sunday, April 16, the Army West Point cadets came out of the Sage-Henley Games in San Diego, California, with the Bronze Medal after winning the second place overall team score. This is the third year that the Army West Point team has competed at the Men’s Senior Intercollegiate Basketball Conference.
The soldiers have been practicing hard, especially the defense, but when the game starts, the W’s find that defense doesn’t always win games and they didn’t win as a team on Sunday. The only way they could win was to be aggressive on the offensive end. Unfortunately, they didn’t do that and lost the game to the #2 team in the nation, the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
The Oregon State team had a better overall showing than Army, but the W’s didn’t do well against the Beavers. They didn’t have the offensive intensity that they normally have. Their big man, Mike Carraway, had only one rebound in the game and only 2 points. They were also outrebounded 51-44 by the Beavers.
The Oregon State team is a mix of walk-ons and highly recruited players and not every one of them have played up to the level of the top players. Coach Crutchfield has a plan for each player and is not afraid to sit the players that don’t live up to that plan. In this case, the matchup against Army’s defense was the plan for Carraway.
