this is my first review in a while, so i may end up writing a couple of more before counter-strike: cz is released, after the steam release in april. it’s an excellent bit of work, a $30 game, so get downloading and check it out. it’s not actually all that difficult, and the various bots are quite fun to play against, but if you’re a real n00b, it will probably be one of the toughest games you’ll ever get your hands on, with bugs and people spending the time getting their weapons set up just right. but get past that, and the game will be yours for you’re own.

this isn’t really a review so much as a quick look at the features of the game, as you will have probably heard by now. condition zero is a collection of single-player maps that share an engine (cz means counter-strike zero, but a counter-strike game with the counter-strike name will have to wait for a sequel to be built around this) which have been «enhanced» using the engine from half-life 2. this takes the best aspects of the basic counter-strike engine to the next level. the revamped half-life engine allows for a lot more physics, more detailed maps, and much better ai – but without the half-life character. the cz engine is still quite messy, however, and the need to get into the habit of using the mouse over the keyboard makes things a bit awkward. as you can see, you get to choose between the new cz maps or the old counter-strike, depending on whether you own both games. this means that the basic team deathmatch rules apply in cz (one point for a player when their teammates get in a room or get killed, one point for the other team).
