Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. History

In 2003, Roblox was originally made by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. They wanted to make online games with their friends. As they studied at Carnegie Mellon University, they thought they would make games without any programming skills. They managed to program their first game, Tennis Roblox, using a 48MHz Mac and had it released in August 2004.[3]

Meanwhile, at the same time, Anuj Jain and Joel Torgerson were studying at North Carolina State University. In the summer of 2003, they created a virtual world called Lemmings. They wanted to study how children construct graphical worlds in their real world, and to create virtual worlds that could have a long-lasting and extensive real-world impact. They also wanted to have the Lemmings world continue to exist even if the users stopped having access to it. They were inspired by Dynamic Land’s construction, and wrote a programming language for the gaming system. Finally, to simulate a real-life construction task that children enjoy, Jain and Torgerson also created a framework that would allow users to build and play games themselves. The foundation of the world was built using Lemmings, which was also programmed by Jain and Torgerson. The world was tested at Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, a public school in Durham, North Carolina.[4]

Later in 2004, Roblox officially began selling virtual money. Robux, which was released as an alternative to Microsoft Points in 2006, is Roblox’s virtual currency.
