This collection is all about concrete – the marble of the 20th century, as it has derisively been called.Drought conditions can force farmers to consider ending their agronomic production careers. History can repeat itself. A century ago, a man-made drought also caused us to regret our decision to travel west. The Great Depression of the 1930s forced many people from the farm and out of rural areas. For many of those who moved west, food became scarcer. In my home state of Kansas, we are just now experiencing those conditions, and many are in the same situation as the people who left the farm or transitioned to urban areas during the last century. I recently had the opportunity to discuss these issues with an older gentleman, who wishes to remain anonymous, because he said he does not want to be seen as coming down on the side of the farmer and rural workers. But in an effort to help him understand farmers’ perspective, I use the first-person voice to relate an experience that I have had. I also told him that these experiences are not rare and help explain why farmers are willing to call Washington leaders “soft on agriculture.” My dad and I lived in rural Missouri. The farm produced corn, soybeans, wheat and raised hogs and poultry. He was a farmer until I was old enough to consider what I wanted to do with my life. I was 10 years old. My dad told me I would grow up like him — still on the farm. He was a World War II-era veteran, who had previously owned a department store in Ozark, Missouri. As I grew older, I learned how to take care of the soil, while he, as our neighbor, kept good books and made good sales. As the saying goes, the money is in the soil. My father was also farming in the same field that I grew up on. We had first cousins who lived on that farm. Their father owned another farm that had been in c6a93da74d
