Basic Concepts in AutoCAD

A CAD drawing is composed of objects such as rectangles, lines, circles, arcs, text, and arrows. Objects can be combined to create an object. The drawing can be viewed in 2D or 3D.

A 2D drawing is composed of shapes and lines.

A 3D drawing is composed of 3D shapes and other geometric solids such as planes, surfaces, and objects.

In a 2D drawing, the origin is a special point located at the geometric center of the drawing canvas. The user can move, rotate, and scale drawing objects with respect to the origin.

In a 3D drawing, the origin is the geometric center of the 3D drawing canvas. The user can move, rotate, and scale the drawing objects with respect to the origin. The 3D geometry can be viewed in 3D or flattened (reduced to 2D).

In both 2D and 3D drawings, a layer is a collection of objects that are displayed or hidden by the user. Layers can be stacked to form a visible drawing area.

In both 2D and 3D drawings, the viewport (viewport) is a rectangular area that the user can move, rotate, and scale.

SolidWorks for Windows is the standard desktop version, while SolidWorks for Unix and Linux is available for both desktop and network versions.

The software was first published in 1992, and was initially a version of Microstation. In 2005, it was acquired by Dassault Systems and then became a part of Dassault Systèmes.

Another system that is very similar to Microstation is PowerCADD. It is used for electrical and mechanical design, and can import and export multiple file formats including DXF. PowerCADD was introduced in 1989. Dassault Systèmes acquired PowerCADD in 1991. Later the PowerCADD network version was also developed. The company’s largest customer base is in the United States and Canada.
