The most dangerous thing in the world for an adolescent is their first car. When you talk to parents of teenagers, they recall that period with incredible clarity. Life didn’t end. Life just went into a different direction.

Get your teen behind the wheel of a car and you will see what I mean. My first car was a 16-year-old Honda Accord. I would not have thought twice about rolling into the driveway and checking the engine over or underneath it. The price was, of course, prohibitive, but my parents didn’t seem to care. I would be sharing their car, after all, so it was up to me to make sure it was safe.

Rightly so. That first car ended up dropping off the road one morning on a long, narrow road in the mountains, with me behind the wheel. I thought I was driving fast, but then I hit a patch of ice and all of a sudden I was sliding in slow motion down the road toward a mountain slope. I woke up in the hospital at three in the morning, a situation that wouldn’t be improved by the fact that my only memory was that of a flashing light that had been pointing at me for what felt like hours.

That first car taught me a valuable lesson: The best way to take care of a car is to learn how to drive it. In fact, the best way to take care of anything is to learn how to use it. Both are equally applicable to electronics.

For example, we are still learning about AVR microcontrollers. Our weekend class on the subject is still half-way into its first chapter, but already we are starting to see how these little marvels can be used to build anything from home entertainment systems and vehicle diagnostics to robots, lighting displays, and even power supply units.

We do well with the software on board the AVR, but the power of an AVR lies in the ability to write code. Using a free code-generation tool (Avr Wizard), we are providing a way for novice programmers to create their own programs without the need for a development board (a process known as “burner hacking”). We have seen a number of Arduino projects that we believe use a simpler and more direct approach, and we think that’s an important goal.

How to check if an array contains only lowercase letters?

In this python code below what are the changes needed to check if the array only contains lowercase letters?
«»»
Given a list of strings, test whether or not each of these strings is made
up of lowercase letters.

Note that it would be too slow for the program to test each character,
so you should use a trick that tests only a few characters at a time to make
the algorithm efficient.
«»»

a = «This sentence has many words.»

len(a) # 10

i = 0
j = len(a) – 1

while i >> all(c in ‘abcdefghij’)
False
>>> all(c in ‘ABCDEFGHIJ’)
True
>>> all(c in ‘abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz’)
True

so, to test for only uppercase letters:
>>> all(c.isupper())
