This part-noir, part-western is in some ways like a vast commercial graphic novel. In the film, Juan Bolsedo’s screenplay beautifully orchestrates moments of hilarity, tension, anxiety and mystery into a clever and involving tale. Based on Carlos Fuentes’ novel, two good-looking men, one an escaped convict (Harrison Ford) and the other a down-on-his-luck American (John Malkovich), hunt for a million-dollar ransom in a rugged, woodsy New Mexico landscape. Despite the fact that a lot of action happens in the film–and lots of it is almost totally silent–everyone’s reactions are sensitively observed in action sequences that play out on a wide open stage. The film’s look is designed to be evocative of the larger than life pictures in the popular Western motion picture magazines that were translated into black-and-white by Fuentes’ friend and frequent collaborator, the photographer Robert Frank. Director Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, Badlands) infuses his movie with a sense of lyrical poetry and meticulous attention to design that sets it apart from the more typical Hollywood movies of the period.

One of the great noir films, photographed in stark black and white by Bob Richardson, this film’s gritty streetscapes and menacing characters make it a film noir classic. Tony Curtis plays a tough private investigator who gets involved in a murder mystery that takes him to the heart of New York City. Though he succeeds in evading the steamy women who dominate the city, he inadvertently ends up with a mob wife (Julie Christie) who insists he become her lover in order to save her life. The film contains some of the best noir photography ever shot–thanks to Richardson’s compositions that draw attention to the dark corners of buildings, the heaving shadows of headlights, and the heavily armored, emotionless, statuesque sexuality of women, or cars and buildings at night. This is a movie that has many things going for it, from the two iconic performances of Robert Mitchum, billed as «the bad boy of film noir», who plays a crook at his evil best and is especially good as an elderly and barely reformed killer, and the strangely touching minor role of Jamie Hernandez (Stella Adler), who plays not only Curtis’s old love but a character who dreams of going back to school. Director Curtis Hanson also has a great eye for details; one night, we see a familiar lighted shop sign in the window of a street where Curtis’s character will later take a young woman after a date.

in the story of the film, a rich, adventurous college senior named alexandra forrest (goldie hawn) goes to paris to look for love. she finds herself crossing paths with the sexually repressed, middle-aged widower jean-louis trintignant, the son of the novelist and member of the french academy, who is on sabbatical from his position teaching literature. initially attracted to his artistic skills and his wealth, she gradually finds herself falling in love with him. when she learns that he is married to the famous novelist, she is distressed, and she resolves to separate him from his wife. but when she is caught in an act of adultery with trintignant, she finds herself charged with a crime that will break up her family and destroy her career. the film centers on the relationship between the two women, and the dilemmas they face in trying to maintain their idealistic visions of love and marriage in an emotional, selfish world. its not just a musical, its a movie, kirk said. the plot is what counts. it will work or it won’t work.
it’s about a woman who gets married to a man who is not only the wrong person for her, but he is also a man who doesn’t love her. he doesn’t love her in any way, shape or form. and thats something thats really attractive to women, kirk said. many men don’t realize that women need to be loved. and this is a man who doesn’t love her at all. thats a lot of power to give somebody. its also, of course, a man who doesn’t love his mother. but to have the love of someone who is completely irresponsible and disinterested in you is something that women can relate to. you cant just ignore that. you have to deal with it. and thats what this film is about.
