A magnetic head may be formed in a small area for a high density recording on to a magnetic disk. It is also possible to form heads for different purposes such as read/write, inductive write, inductive read for head position control or external antennae. A head which can be used as a sensor of different width for a fixed distance to the disk is also desirable. The surface of the magnetic head can be made plane by lapping while maintaining the flatness, to give low flying height. If the head is too low, however, the readout sensitivity will be reduced. Therefore, the head surface must be maintained at a certain distance from the magnetic disk for a high readout sensitivity.
Moreover, the operating characteristics of the recording/reproduction system cannot be fully attained when the surface of the magnetic head is not kept a certain distance from the magnetic disk. Thus, the spacing error between the magnetic head and the magnetic disk must be maintained within an acceptable range in order to realize high density recording on the magnetic disk.
An example of a conventional thin film magnetic head is shown in FIG. 1. This magnetic head consists of a slider 10 and a slider 11, both of which are bonded to a head base 12. The slider 10 is bonded to the base 12 with an adhesive 13, while the slider 11 is fixed to the base 12 by caulking with an annular caulking portion 14. The fixing of the slider 11 is intended to reduce the flying height of the slider 10. The slider 11 is made of a material which is hardened by irradiating the slider 11 with a laser beam. When the slider 11 is irradiated with a laser beam to harden the slider material, the beam spot is first focused on the upper side of the slider 11 and then on the lower side thereof in this order.
The slider 10 has an upper surface 10a, a lower surface 10b and a side surface 10c. The upper surface 10a is finished by plating, while the lower surface 10b is finished by etching. The side surface 10c is used as a position control guide for keeping the slider 10 flat. The slider 11 has a side surface 11a, a lower surface 11b and an upper surface 11c.
