Almost as important as Train to Busan is one of its leading characters. While other movies might have a single standout, this zombie movie has many standouts. Su-an Kim (who also co-starred in 2013 film Dae Jang Geum ) is a joy as the daughter in a dysfunctional family who loves skateboarding, and who is always trying to find a way out of her circumstances. At first glance the family might seem like a perfect fit for tragedy. But even when Su-an is left alone, her big sister (go to ring) and mother (go to ring) find a way to help her navigate the chaos. The family dysfunction is ground-breaking within the zombie genre, as family characters have traditionally been written as sacrificial lambs. But through a series of compassionate and hilarious exchanges, Train to Busan showcases a likeable family unit. A +

While all eyes are on the international success of addictive K-dramas and Bong Joon-hos Academy Award-winning film Parasite, the country’s filmmakers are also creating some of the most ambitious, unsettling and even comedic entries to the zombie genre. The renewed K-zombie movie trend arguably began with Yeon Sang-hos 2016 Train to Busan , which envisions a zombie outbreak on a moving trainand has since expanded to encompass many more films.

The zombie genre is so well worn, anything fresh to sink your teeth into is always darkly delicious. As such, writer-director Sang-ho Yeon’s smashing together of the disaster movie genre with modern running zombies — and all the frantic, breathless action they bring with them — makes Train to Busan a treat for fans of both genres. Here a diverse group of people are brought together to fend off zombies on a very narrow train. This includes Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) and his young daughter, Su-an (a brilliant Su-an Kim).
