I am using the RAW files from my Fujifilm X-T1 with the firmware 2.0.1 (the same version as on my review unit). The X-Trans RAW format is generally uncompressed, but there is compression during conversion. Thus, it is a half-way point between RAW files and JPEG pictures. I have at least 15 images with the set “Large” quality, and I also used some “Mid” and “Small” sizes. I tested the file conversion with a 5-hour album and 30 images, which produced no errors, at least on my iMac with the latest macOS update (in July 2018). The conversion speed seemed to be roughly 4-5 times faster, but that may be a side effect of my aged machine. The new 64-bit version is a welcome improvement, though. The conversion process is still involved, but it’s barely noticeable. A battery level around 5 percent is somewhat of an annoyance, but it does its job and in fact indicates that it is properly capturing the image with the most appropriate settings. I am pretty sure that further optimization is possible. For example, the camera often uses the shutter button to uncurl the metering pattern, which can waste energy. There may also be room for improvement when it comes to the RAW conversion parameters via menu. In actuality, all the images come out with the same background, with only the foreground’s color and saturation varying. Everything else remains identical. Adobe may be able to make improvements, as the Fujifilm software remains unchanged. Hopefully, we will see more improvements. I should say that I did not face any issues with Lightroom. When starting a new perspective or the main view, the conversion process took no longer than a minute. Where a file would otherwise take between 10 and 16 minutes, it now took less than 5 minutes. I guess it just takes time to make sure that the necessary settings are correct. However, the Adobe’s ARRI ProRes conversion is still a no-go. It takes a very long time and you cannot preview the changes as you’re making them. The conclusion is that Adobe has yet to get the conversion process closer to Fujifilm’s software. Finally, I want to touch on how the monitor is implemented in this review unit. The X1C is an ideal companion for a 27-inch screen. I doubt that the 24-inch swiveling screen can replace it. It just doesn’t offer enough space for two high resolutions, which is something that Fujifilm is seeking to include for the upcoming X-T3. In terms of color reproduction, the X1C colors are on par with the X-T2.
