How can I reduce the thickness of a line on an SVG image?

I created an SVG that I want to use in an illustrator file for some kind of logo. I’m having trouble with drawing a thin line on top of this logo, with a starting thickness of about 3px, and a desired thickness of 0px.
Using the pen tool, I’ve tried drawing a line of that thickness (Ctrl+R to make sure they’re that thickness), and then another line of about 2px (although sometimes it needs to be thicker).
How can I achieve this?

An easy way is to just first create a long path with about 4-5 points (extend the pen tool with a long start path). Then reduce the stroke width.
