No, it’s not safe. You’d get a warning saying that x is not defined because you’re trying to use a variable name in a numeric context.
But that’s not a problem. Because whatever happens, $elements[‘x’] will not get defined (it’s a variable that never gets written to, it’s never set). What it does is simply return the value from the $elements array whose index is 0.
