Just before the holidays Steam’s annual Holiday Sale kicked into overdrive with discounts on thousands of games, VR Content and Steam Machines. While we’ve covered a lot of games in the time-honored tradition of weekend previews, there were few individual games that made me say, “damn, this game looks damn good!” In fact, from an experience standpoint, the last few holiday sales have struggled to surpass 2014’s impressive bundle with the iRobot Roomba. That was supported by some new features, but nothing that made the experience and the games in the sale shine like the 2014 release.

The final game to be released in the iRobot Bundle was Back to Bed, and the reason it worked so well was because of the way the game was designed and executed. Back to Bed flowed incredibly well, with gameplay, a storyline, and game modes that never stopped moving forward. Even the game’s freeform exploration mode remained engaging even when the other components of the game were in service.

But while Back to Bed was a great game at a bargain-priced $5.99, I was never happy to cancel my in-progress demo or buy the game outright. That was because there was no other game in the bundle that managed to hook me as Back to Bed did.

When the bundle was announced my first thought was, “oh man, another VR experience!” However, due to VR’s high prices and limited library of experiences, I didn’t put too much weight on the idea of buying a $2,200 Sony headset instead of a $800 headset with a far smaller library of experiences. For the same reasons, my mind didn’t jump to the idea of putting my face into a device I might only use to play VR games on at some point.

That changed last Friday with the release of the new SteamVR Lighthouse API, which many developers are saying will allow for the creation of much more natural environments, not just for VR, but for other forms of AR as well. There were of course no major games released with the newly announced API on Friday, but Steam is offering a week of early access to a new simulator called FSX Extreme Flight Pack. FSX Extreme Flight Pack is an updated version of the FSX Flight Simulator, one of the most famous flight simulator games around.
