I don’t remember having to use layers and masks in PhotoShop until 2005, so I thought I was over the learning curve. But I was wrong. I’m still finding uses for them. I see them used only sparingly today, however, so perhaps the rising tide of AI-powered automatic selection will help those who are still using layers and masks.

The September 2014 Update (version 8.4) introduced the Web Album and recentering tools to the program, as well as improvements to the lighting and healing tools. Photoshop also gained the ability to open and save a number of formats natively, including PSD, TIFF, DNG, JPEG 2000, AVI, and BMP. VoiceOver and Zoom tools for accessibility were added, along with a new interface designed to be easier for tablets and touch-screen devices.

What It Does: This release of Photoshop CC includes two tools that we think you’re really going to like. The Content-Aware and Clone Stamp tools copy, cut, and relocate patterns onto your layers. The Content-Aware tool can be used to crop, rotate, resize, and even flip images. While the Clone Stamp tool can be used where you want to add a mask that can be used to copy selected area into another copy.

In keeping with this release, you also get a new feature called Smart Sharpen. When you shoot with a fixed aperture, and the camera is not letting in much of the light, it can cause your images to appear blurry. Smart Sharpen is a new technology that lets you take in additional light to help reduce the blurring.

In the final release of CS6, you get a new technology called Smart Objects. It not only helps differentiate between duplicate layers, but it makes it easy for your work to be «smart.» In other words, it lets you take your work and add various text, captions, or other elements to it and it can even be layered. The only thing you can’t do, for reasons we’ll dive into later, is syncing off a Smart Object to a social media platform such as Facebook.

It seems like the abilities people expect from that day in the newspaper have continued to improve. In this release, the tools and features are actually used with a more dynamic workflow. You will find the ability to import, export, and much more from a standard palette. In other words, you’ll be able to perform a variety of tasks immediately, instead of waiting for the start of a project.
