nacciyaar tirumozhi is a set of 143 verses composed by andal one of the twelve azhwars in the vaishnava tradition. her fickness, inability to bear the the results of the civil war between the two armies, the internal conflicts,.. the deceit practiced by her mother to achieve her purpose of birth (to marry kannapiran and his right hand), the perilous journey of feet, what ineffectualness, the shouting faces that confused her, etc., etc.

when it comes to devotional pieces, there are so many verses which are not sung by every devotee. the rarest in my view is andal’s rendition of thirukkural. here she picks up the mantras of the 830 verses of the kural and sings them beautifully. it is very rare to encounter a hymn where each verse is sung by two different voices. in andal’s case, the hymns belong to two different stages of her life, and after her marriage she opts for the more poignant poems from the kural to hearten the marriage night. an example is the arudhi stotram (verse 3516-3-417). here, andal is unable to cover the mahratta phrase, and only the two telugu words are sung by her. her copious tears, for a moment, wash away the agni hymn. her voice captures the depth of her anguished soul, so very brilliantly.

the nachiyar thirumozhi is a very soulful hymn, and captures the purity of divine love, while describing it. the great feature of the hymn is that we get to hear the sophisticated words she uses to describe god. the word used for god here is ‘andal’, which is an honor to the god, who looked after her from her earliest days. the hymn is written in praise of krishna, but we don’t hear anything about his form, nor do we get to see andal’s emotional face. here andal sings about how many favors he bestows on her, without she ever meriting them.
