Discovering Your Layers

When you open Photoshop, a window appears on the right side of the screen containing a series of rows of icons, each representing a Photoshop layer. There are many layers available to you, including ones for type, effects, shapes, tools, text, and so on. You can create your own layers, similar to an onion, adding more and more layers as needed to make your image.

You may also see Layers panels in the main Photoshop window. The Layers panel contains a summary of the layers you have created in your file. Each layer has a unique number, represented in parentheses before the name of the layer, and its color is indicated by the words Background, Foreground, or Color.

The Layers panel is a great way to view your image, as you can see in Figure 11-7. It is also a handy place to see the attributes of any individual layer.

To create a new layer, click the New Layer icon (a plus sign with a drop shadow). To edit an existing layer, click the layer’s thumbnail and then use the Options bar (which appears with the layer thumbnail) to change its settings. To delete a layer, right-click it and choose Delete Layer. (You can also delete a layer by choosing Layer⇒Layer from the main menu or pressing Alt+Delete.)

Color is the most important part of any photo (and non-digital image, for that matter). It can be hard to put a happy face on a sad subject, but the right color can make the difference between a subject that’s unappealing and one that’s pretty darn nice.

No matter how hard you try, the colors in your photos are bound to change due to natural sources, such as light and temperature. Photos taken on a cloudy day may look bluer than you thought they would, thanks to the low light conditions.

How to open and save files

You can open files stored in your hard drive, CD-R, DVD-R, USB flash drive, or camera memory card.

There are different ways to open files, but I will only be covering the two most common methods.

First method is to double click on the image. This way, you can apply all the tools, brushes, actions, or filters to the image.

Another way is to add the image to your computer by pressing Ctrl + A (or command + A on Mac) and opening the image.

Then, you can apply all the tools, brushes, actions, or filters to the image.

A dialog box will appear on the left side of your screen. You can use either the keyboard or the mouse to work with the image.

How to save images

There are two ways to save images.

First is saving the image to your hard drive.

Simply click the image once it is open, go to File and click Save to save it.

Second is saving it to the internet. Click File, click the option to save in the web browser, type in the name for the image that you want to save and click Save.

This gives you the opportunity to directly upload the image to your websites, blogs, or social media channels.

Brush Effects

Once you create a Brush, you may apply one of two effects to it:
Dissolve (Dissolve Settings) is an easy way to soften the edges of an image when it’s blended with the color of the background. Dissolving works best on solid colors and light areas. If the image includes many colors or darker tones, use SpongeBump (SpongeBump Settings).
Outer Glow is useful for adding highlights or shadows to an image. To create it, choose the brush that you want to use and then click on the dialog box. You’ll see a preview of the brush effect.

In the following example, I’ll show you how to apply this brush to our artichoke image:

To apply Outer Glow effect to our artichoke photo, follow these steps:

From the Menu bar, choose Brush, then choose Outer Glow.

The settings box will appear. Select the brush that you want to use from the Size drop-down menu.

Press and hold the Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) key and click on the Preview button. When previewing the effect, you’ll see the image with black background. If you see the outline of the effect, keep holding down the Ctrl or Cmd key and click again to see the effect applied to the image. The preview window will turn gray.

If your preview is white, hold down the Ctrl key and click again. The preview window will turn gray.

Click OK to accept the settings or Cancel to exit the dialog box without applying the effect.

There are many other brush effects you may apply to your image:

You can then apply effects to multiple objects and merge the selected areas. You can also use the Clone Stamp to copy pixels from one area and place them in another area.

You can also create a toner, which is a special brush, which will create a fine line that looks like a brush stroke.

You can edit the pixel aspect ratio to crop or enlarge an object. You can also zoom in and out of an image. For example, if you wish to zoom in to a close-up of an object, you can press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) and scroll.
