The two-page spread I created for the cover story was relatively straightforward and I knew what I wanted from my 4″ × 6″ test scene board. I used Photoshop to “paint” the plates, but it was only when working directly with the source files that I found a way to create a seamless panoramic composite – the clouds were out of Photoshop! So, if you want results that can be used to “paint” many pages within an in-depth spread, or make a single image that can be easily re-sized and stacked, you won’t get much out of Photoshop alone. So, as you will probably notice the file size is much smaller even if you create a blank file. Even though a pixel pushing tool can help you, only you can know how to size a file for the print size.

Hue and Saturation tools are used to adjust color. You can use a saturation slider to control Sharpness and Black Point to create the sense of low or high contrast. You can use the Curves tool to modify the local contrast in an image or the overall contrast in an image. You can also edit contrast with the Unsharp Mask tool. Using the Gradient tool, you can customize the look of an image by dragging a gradient across an area of the image.
