i started in music at the age of 11 in richmond, virginia. i moved to la for a couple of years, then i moved back to jamaica for about a year and i came up with my sound, the sound that i have today. i’ve been in jamaica and the us ever since i was 12, so i’ve been developing my career since i was 12. i’ve been working with this project i put out a mixtape, kings of the road, i followed up it with a second mixtape, heart of gold. i’ve been working on my album. i’m out now. everyone else was out, but i just wanted to come out. i wanted to come out with a bang. i’m back.

when i was making the album, i needed to hear my own voice. i needed to hear my own vocals. after every beat i would sing the hook and i would be like, wow, this is something. i couldn’t just tell it, i had to be able to enjoy it.

j.r. rotem did the track with me called yeah. he just brought a fire to it. he brought an energy. i just wanted to be around him. he was one of the best producers out there and he even produced my second album. i wasn’t feeling right. i wasn’t feeling right and i didn’t feel like i fit in. i didn’t really fit in at that time. then he came along and he has that energy and he has that mentality that he worked hard as fuck and i appreciate that. he did a lot for me.

i’ve been doing this for a while, since i was a kid. i’ve been in the industry for a while. i’ve seen how some of these people have broken through. one guy that really helped me was jay-z. he understood my sound and he understood my vibe. he had me sing over a beat and it totally sold me. i was like, «i just want to be a part of that world.» so the whole experience with jay-z helped me a lot, it really did. i’m humbled. i’m so happy to be in the situation i’m in today. this album is not for the dj. it’s for the listener. it’s for the people that are going to be listening to it.

the hits are bigger and more sparsely scattered, but one of the best examples of the angling-for-the-biggest-possible-pop-impact is the way i are, a track that could have been bigger if it hadn’t ended up on his second album. sean kingston’s debut album welcome to fabulous kingston was a clear standout in 2005. but just look at the numbers: his record had less than half the sales of usher’s monster comeback confessions, and was heavily restricted to jamaican airwaves. in the u.s., the album sold just over 100,000 copies, far below usher’s confessions and even her massive worldwide smash my way, which wasn’t even released until months after confessions and my way. kingston’s follow-up to welcome to fabulous kingston, sean kingston, was an improvement, but it still sold less than 150,000 copies in the u. it’s a shame, because sean kingston has a lot going for it. it’s a great debut album, with some of the best songs of the year–check out the title track, which starts off with a great opening verse, and the early single, run it, which is a great track. in fact, the album is very similar to an eminem album: it has a strong first track, with a great hook, followed by a couple of tracks that take it to the next level, and then two or three that are below par. the problem is that the first three are great, and the last two are bad, which ruins the album. sean kingston comes across as a young kid, with a good heart and a mind of his own. his new album is pretty pop-ish, but it’s fresh. i’m not a big fan of dancehall or reggae music, so i couldn’t get into the whole music, but the lyrics and delivery are pretty good. 5ec8ef588b
