Seaworld Adventure Parks Tycoon is an engine, not a game. That’s not to say it has no gameplay. Seaworld Adventure Parks Tycoon is full of what you’d expect: cute, cartoonish animals; dirt and grime from all the construction going on in the park; plastic rides that look like giant Lego creations; and a variety of tiny little things that just seem to float around. But, the overall experience is more about watching a construction zone in complete failure than actually building something of great value. In fact, I wasn’t too impressed with the game’s ability to generate a park that looked at all realistic.
The game’s animal handling system is poorly implemented. You can’t pick up an animal and put it in a different holding area. Instead, you must click on the animal and select an area for it to go. In some cases, you can then click on another animal, which will move with the first. This kind of «handling» system wasn’t really the basis for RollerCoaster Tycoon, and it feels a bit like cheating. Even worse is SeaWorld Sports Games’ virtually nonexistent animal shelter. SeaWorld Adventure Parks Tycoon does offer some animal training exercises, but you’re limited to just a few of the most common animals. You can’t pick up a seal and make it swim, for example. Besides, they don’t seem to make very good team members, and the sea lion in my park was literally screaming at me for taking him away from the ocean.
There’s no such thing as a bad admission price on SeaWorld. It’s interesting to see how they’ve managed to make the simple idea of a cheap thrill park work. Perhaps it’s their location off the coast of Florida. Or maybe it’s because they have such a big name, but SeaWorld Adventure Parks Tycoon 2 lacks a lot of the minutiae that makes the original so good. When you drop the lid on SeaWorld Adventure Parks Tycoon, you might be pleasantly surprised. The game’s a good bit better than expected, and the park’s sim mode more than makes up for its shortcomings. But if you’re an addict like me, the idea of building SeaWorld’s roller coasters in their native environment is going to keep you coming back for more.
